During unfavorable growth conditions, many protozoa can convert to a resistant, dormant stage called a cyst
Developmental phases of protozoa
Protozoan are either free living or parasitic microorganisms that derives its food from organic matter or body tissues of a living host.
Examples of protozoa that are parasitic to man are;
- the ameba,
- the flagellates,
- the ciliates, and
- the sporozoa.
There are usually two developmental phases which include:
- proliferative stages and
- dormant stages
The dormant stage is the resting cyst stage in which the protozoan transforms to be able to survive harsh conditions, such as exposure to extreme temperatures or long periods without access to nutrients, water, or oxygen.
