Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration, so if we have a perfum or a plate with a smelly food, this concentration of particles will, by diffusion, move to an area with a low concentration, which in this case is the air, and therefore by moving freely in the air, these particles will eventually reach our noses.
